Hello! (the short story)
I am Kelly and I am a flower farmer in Fairfax, VA. Ever since we moved into our home my passion for gardening has been growing and my grass has been shrinking. I love being outside among the flowers and I am constantly amazed at Nature's Beauty. My goal is to bring fresh, local flowers to my community. I specialize in locally grown blooms such as Dahlias, Zinnias and Cosmos.
About (The long version)
Last year I had an abundance of Dahlia blooms so I started sharing my flowers with my neighborhood and the response was amazing! I met so many kind people who shared how the flowers brightened up their day. The Amazon driver, who I keep very busy, told me he made his girlfriend's day by bringing her home a bouquet. I thought, I would love to increase the amount of people I can reach with my flowers and, viola, Nature's Beauty was born. Flowers bring me joy and I want to share that joy with you. There's something special about watching something go from a seed to a beautiful, unique bloom.
Growing up I was actively involved in showing my Golden Retrievers in AKC and 4-H dog shows. Most weekends my mom would drive me to the dog show at the crack of dawn and we would listen to "The Garden Show" with Paul Parent on AM radio. So much static. I don't know why my mom bothered to listen; she always knew the answer to the questions being asked. My mom had a beautiful garden and landscaped our entire yard with blooms throughout the seasons. Did I love it and dig in the dirt every chance I got? Not a chance. I remember when I had to weed the sidewalk cracks and I thought this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of doing. Guess who has the cleanest sidewalks in town now?
Before I started on this journey I had no idea the vast majority, 80%, of flowers are imported. The flowers you buy at the grocery store were likely cut at minimum several days ago before they traveled thousands of miles to get to your table. They may have been grown in areas with unfair labor practices and dangerous levels of chemicals. To ensure pests aren't introduced into the US they may be heavily sprayed. Not exactly the picture we think of when we imagine beautiful, delicate blooms.
With local flowers you can reduce your carbon footprint, enjoy what is in season where you live and support your local community! Me, I'm your local community and I'm vying for your support. With beautiful flowers every season here in NOVA why not buy local?
This is a family endeavor. My supportive husband has set up all my drip irrigation, does most of the heavy lifting and most importantly does the math so I can figure out how many plants will fit in our space. Our 4 year old Hazel loves to tend to the flowers and plant seeds with me. If there is a water hose involved, 2 year old Max is your guy, with his sparkly rain boots he can't stay away from water. Simba, my loyal companion, never leaves my side and likes to photobomb at every opportunity.
